Mid-year check-in, goal progress and such

Halfway through 2015? Holy crap, that went fast! Looking back at my New Year’s post, I set up two simple goals for this year (as far as running is concerned).

1. Four 100 mile months this year
2. No zero weeks

So far, this year in running is going fairly well. I had one zero week this spring (Thank you, flu!), but I have managed to get out there every week otherwise. Some of you may think that this is a piece of cake, but with two little kiddos, work, etc. etc., it can be tricky sometimes.

One thing that has helped me be more consistent in my running is getting paid for it. What?!? That’s right. This doughy, pasty “runner" is a professional athlete. Ok, full disclosure, I am on staff to lead the group runs at my local running store that I had been attending for FREE for the past few years. Being accountable to a group of other runners is a great tool for staying motivated. Oh, and a paycheck doesn’t hurt either.
As for the larger goal of having four 100 mile months, I’ve got a big goose egg. The closest I got was in January with 74. Here’s my monthly mileage so far this year.

January: 74.26
February: 34 (13.1 of which was the Tallahassee Half Marathon. Almost had to turn in my runner card…)
March: 34.17
April: 21.59
May: 41.04
June: 40.27

Total through June: 245.33 miles. Not too shabby, and ahead of where I was this time last year. I still feel that the mileage goal I set for myself this year is attainable, primarily since it is not a total mileage goal. In years past, I would get way behind, get discouraged, and take a long break from running. Not this year. That being said, it’s time to get serious about some miles this July. Heat and humidity be damned, I am going to try my best to get to 100 miles this month.

I’d better stop typing and get out there!

How are you progressing toward your running goals? How do you stay motivated?
